How BinTheory handles your information
BinTheory is the feed-bin monitoring service run by FarmTheory. This page says what the app and the service collect, why, who else sees it, how long it is kept, and how you delete your account. Last updated 23 October 2026.
Who is responsible
FarmTheory, Northern Ireland, is the controller of the information described here. Write to bintheory@farmtheory.co.uk about anything on this page.
What we collect
Your account. A username, your email address and a password, which is stored only as a one-way hash. If you fill in your details in the app or on this site: your name, farm name, mobile number, billing address and postcode. These are printed on the feed orders you send, so the supplier knows whose order it is.
Your bins. The name, size and leg layout you give each bin, where it stands on the map (a point you place by hand, or the position the bin's own unit reports), and everything the unit measures: weights, temperatures, the state of its sensors, its signal, firmware and health reports. Also what you enter about a bin: deliveries and dockets, estimates, zeros, wagon weights, feed settings, orders and your answers to the questions the app asks.
Feed ordering. If you use ordering: the supplier's email address, your account number with them, the delivery address and notes for the driver, and each order. If you give a feed company access to a bin, the email address you typed for them.
Technical records. Our server keeps ordinary logs of requests: the address your phone connected from, the time and what was asked for. They are used to keep the service running and are rotated out within a few weeks.
On your phone. The app keeps your sign-in token, the last list of your bins, up to 30 days of readings and your alert settings, so it opens quickly and can warn you when a bin is low. The camera is used only while you scan the QR code on a unit; no picture is kept. The app does not use your phone's location. Alerts are made on the phone itself; no push service receives them.
Why we use it
To show you what is in your bins, to warn you when one is low, to record deliveries and feed-out, to send the orders you ask us to send, and to keep the service secure and working. We do not sell your information, use it for advertising, or build profiles from it.
Who else sees it
- Feed suppliers you choose. An order email carries your name, farm, mobile, email, account number and the delivery address and notes. A feed company you give access to sees the bins you grant, their levels, the delivery details and the orders on them.
- The email service that carries order emails and the codes we send to suppliers.
- OpenStreetMap, whose map tiles the app and this site load when a map is shown. Their servers see your device's internet address and which map area was requested, under OpenStreetMap's own policy.
- Nobody else, unless the law requires it.
Your information is held on FarmTheory's server and in its backups.
How long we keep it
For as long as your account exists. Backups are kept for 14 days. When you delete your account, your personal details are removed at once and the account cannot be used again; bins that only you owned are retired and their units are released, and bins you shared with another account stay with them. Readings from a retired bin may remain, without anything that links them to you.
Deleting your account
In the app, open Settings, then Delete account, and confirm with your password. The account, your details and your links to bins are removed as described above.
If you cannot use the app, email bintheory@farmtheory.co.uk from the account's email address and ask for it to be deleted. We will do it within 30 days and confirm by email.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of your information, have it corrected or deleted, restrict or object to how it is used, and receive it in a portable form. Email us to do any of these. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
BinTheory is a tool for farm businesses and is not intended for children under 16.
